E le autorità giapponesi ora ammettono: l’incidente ai reattori 2 e 3 dell’impianto nucleare di Fukushima Daiichi è di categoria 5 su 7 (scala Ines), mentre per le altre unità può essere catalogato come di categoria 3.
Incidente classificato come 5 nella scala Ines significa incidente significativo con possibili conseguenze all’esterno dell’impianto.
– Rilascio all’esterno di materiale radioattivo, in quantità radiologicamente equivalente ai valori compresi tra 100 e 1.000 Tera-Becquerel, ovvero tra 3.000 e 30.000 Curie, richiedente una parziale attuazione di pianificate contromisure.
– Danni gravi al nocciolo del reattore o alle barriere protettive.
Esempi:
– incidente di Windscale (oggi Sellafield), Regno Unito, 1957.
– incidente di Three Mile Island, Stati Uniti, 1979. Danni seri al nocciolo del reattore nucleare e alle barriere di protezione radiologica.
– attuale incedente di Fukushima, Giappone, 2011.

Japanese authorities have informed the IAEA that new INES ratings have been issued for some of the events relating to the nuclear emergency at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear power plants.
Japanese authorities have assessed that the core damage at the Fukushima Daiichi 2 and 3 reactor units caused by loss of all cooling function has been rated as 5 on the INES scale.
Japanese authorities have assessed that the loss of cooling and water supplying functions in the spent fuel pool of the unit 4 reactor has been rated as 3.
Japanese authorities have assessed that the loss of cooling functions in the reactor units 1, 2 and 4 of the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant has also been rated as 3. All reactor units at Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant are now in a cold shut down condition.
